Hardwood is sold by the board foot: a piece 1 in thick, 12 in wide and 12 in long. Enter the thickness and width in inches and the length in feet.
Use the rough (nominal) thickness the yard prices by: 4/4 is 1 in, 5/4 is 1¼ in, 8/4 is 2 in.
How it’s calculated
- Board feet = thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) ÷ 12.
- With length in inches: thickness × width × length ÷ 144.
