Topsoil Calculator
Enter the area and depth. For a new lawn, 4 to 6 inches of topsoil gives grass a good start; for topdressing an existing lawn, a quarter to half an inch is plenty. Raised beds are usually filled 8 to 12 inches deep.
Topsoil settles, so the calculator adds a little extra by default.
How it’s calculated
- Cubic yards = length × width × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27.
- Tons ≈ cubic yards × 1.1 (dry topsoil weighs about 2,000 to 2,200 lb a yard; wet soil weighs more).
